Hang on
I’m not quite sure why I chose the hottest day of the year to make some curtains, but I did.
I had bought two large linen/cotton sheets from Emmaüs (charity shop) a couple of weeks back. They cost me 8 euros each, which may seem a lot for a couple of old sheets, but they had some beautiful embroidery on them, and I had plans for them. I’m not sure Brian quite had the same vision. I asked him to measure the windows for me, then to help me fold the sheets in the atelier in the way I needed them. I had already washed and ironed them, ready for my project, so I was able to start straight away.
The next step was to cut one of the sheets straight down the middle. I have become much more confident doing this kind of thing, which once would have been quite frightening. The embroidery flowed around two of the corners, these were going to be the bottom of the soon-to-be curtains. All I then needed to do was hem the inner edges, that I had just cut, and measure up from the bottom of the curtain to the height of the window that Brian had given me. The sheet was a suitable length to then fold in half onto itself, and use this second drop as the lining.
I then sewed across the top to create a tube for the curtain pole. A good iron and voila, a pair of curtains.
Even though this room has shutters, the extra addition of curtains helps keep it cool.
The embroidery detail works really well. I’m just loving how they hang and have come together. I do have a second sheet, which I’ve yet to use, it’s slightly different, and I will share it when I use it. Probably a winters job though.
